ArtBar’s cocktail class description:

“Take part in one of ArtBar’s forty-five minute cocktail making classes complete with a sampling of our appetizers. We invite you to become an amateur Mixologist as you learn how to make a specialty cocktail under the expert instruction of our Director of Food and Beverage, Troy Clarke.”

I was not sure what to expect, but it sounded like a fun new adventure, close to home.  For those of you who don’t already know, ArtBar is located in the Royal Sonesta, with great views of The Charles and Boston, a few blocks away from NorthPoint.

I signed-up for the first cocktail class on Thursday at 6:30pm, Gin:

“We will begin with the spirit that dates back to the 16th century and was first present in a Dutch distilling manual in 1562 by Philip Hermanni’s (Constelyn Distilleerbook). We will talk about four different styles and where they came from along with what to do with the spirit that we call Genever (Gin).  Together we will learn how to make a classic cocktail called the Aviation and the original Martini. We will also discuss the history and why we see this spirit gaining popularity again with the growth of the Gin category.”

Although unsure of what to expect, I quickly realized ArtBar had a big night in store for us.  They proved to be great hosts, taking time to make everyone feel at home and keeping the presentation upbeat and interactive.  The room was setup nicely and beautiful presented, as you can see in the pictures.

The first drink we tried (which is on the ArtBar menu) was the Gin Fizz.  I’ve never had this drink before and was not sure what to expect of the frothy concoction handed to me.  But wow!  The drink has different flavors and textures that you wouldn’t expect.  We didn’t learn how to make this drink though- I don’t think they want to give away the secrets!

ArtBar's, Cocktail, Classes, Cambridge, Northpoint, Gin,

After our Gin Fizz we learned how to taste a spirit – which is not the same as tasting wine. We swirled and spit 3 different types of Gin, learning and discussing the differences.  Next we had demonstrations and lessons from Troy.  We learned to make two classic Gin drinks:  The Aviation and The Classic Gin Martini.  We were taught the difference between shaking and stirring and when it is appropriate to do each.  Listen up James Bond!  We practiced both methods with our drinks.  With Troy’s help, we all were able to make cocktails that looked and tasted great!  I think with the Gin Fizz, the classic Gin Martini and the Aviation there was a drink for everyone’s tastes.  After all the hard work, we had a great time enjoying our craftsmanship.

While at the bar, we also had a preview of what to see at next month’s Rum class with a Flip made by Troy himself!  The rum class will be December 17th and more details are on ArtBar’s website and blog:  www.artbarcambridge.com.

While on the site, check out ArtBar’s full cocktail menu.  Some of the ingredients or mixture of ingredients may seem strange.  Hello – eggs?! And believe me when you see a raw egg sitting in the bottom of your glass it is hard to get that image out of your head.  But true to what must be ArtBar’s mantra “don’t be afraid of the egg”, the unconventional (ie not boring!) mixtures come together to create yummy cocktails.  Now with a brave face and a trust of ArtBar’s mixology I cannot wait to try more drinks on the menu.  Which will have to be saved for another day…..and maybe I will see you there!

Cheers!
